A massive car bomb in Beirut that killed eight people including a senior intelligence officer is being blamed on...Syria.

Before his death in Friday's blast, Wissam al-Hassan uncovered evidence that implicated Syria along with Hezbollah in the assassination of Lebanon's former prime minister.

Lebanese Christian politician, Samir Geagea

SOUNDBITE: Lebanese Christian Leader, Samir Geagea, Saying (Arabic):

''He was one of the most serious security officials who was uncovering plots, and the most recent was the Michel Samaha case which he uncovered. Could it be anymore clear about which side is behind the killing today?''

Angry locals burned tires and held protests across Lebanon in response to the intelligence officer's death. Protesters also blocked major roads.

Lebanese officials say at least 80 people were wounded in the explosion which took place during rush hour.

The blast on Friday brought the war in neighbouring Syria to the Lebanese capital. It also came on a day that saw Syria engaged in attacks with another neighbor-Turkey.
