A chemical spill at an American food factory in northern Germany forced the evacuation of 1,800 people, according to German media and rescue services.

The spill at the Kraft Foods plant, which caused no injuries, occurred on Monday afternoon, according to a company spokeswoman.

According to German media reports, workers had accidentally mixed thousands of liters of sodium base liquor and nitric acid which can have serious consequences, prompting the fire department to raise the red alert in the area.

The reports say poisonous vapors which escaped into the air have since disappeared as fire services continue to try to prevent the tank from bursting.
