Nord Stream switches on second gas route

The second branch of the Nord Stream gas pipeline linking Germany with Russia has been put into service.

The 1,200 kilometre pipe under the Baltic Sea will double the amount of gas that can be carried to 55-billion cubic metres a year.

The pipeline avoids crossing Ukraine, a supply route that has been disrupted in the past.
