Grenade Carrying Man Spooks Cop - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

A man caused quite a stir in San Mateo recently when he was spotted by a police car in his car donning a gas mask.

Gilberto Masias, a costume shop employee, was on his way to work wearing military fatigues, a gas mask and carrying a grenade. It seems that Masias was due to be standing outside of the store with a sign to lure customers in. "At my work, we're supposed to be wearing costumes, you know, to greet customers and this was the costume I was going to be wearing."

An officer detained him and upon seeing the hand grenade called the bomb squad. A half block area around the man’s vehicle was evacuated while the bomb team investigated. The grenade was real, but according to the police, was inactive. San Mateo police have asked residents to be “smart with your costume choice” as "Costumes with very realistic looking weapons can create fear and safety concern among community members, and may provoke a response by law enforcement.”

Have you ever gotten in trouble for wearing a costume?
