Trailing 10 points to 6 after two days of inspired golf from Team US, Europe captain Jose-Maria Olazabal loaded the top of the board with his strongest players in a bid to get the momentum going.

His stars repaid Olazabal's faith as Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Rory MacIlroy, Justin Rose and Paul Lawrie won the first five matches to spark a comeback win that echoed the US' stunning win at Brookline in 1999.

It was left to German Martin Kaymer to seal the victory on the 18th hole as he sunk a putt to defeat Steve Stricker and take Europe to the 14 point total they needed to retain the cup and spark jubilant scenes in front of a stunned Medinah crowd.
