Tokyo hit by Typhoon Jelawat

A tropical storm passes near Tokyo Sunday with a wave of strong winds and torrential rains.

The storm hit the southern island of Okinawa as a Category four typhoon before landing on the main island.

People were forced to brace the elements outside.

More than 600 flights were canceled.

(SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) 53-YEAR-OLD HOKKAIDO RESIDENT YUKO NAKATA SAYING:

"I'm quite surprised because my flights have never been canceled. I have had numerous experiences of taking off when typhoons came."

Bus stations were packed.

Similar scenes at train stations as people waited for relief.

Japanese broadcaster NHK said one man was killed in the storm when he was washed out to sea while fishing.
