U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney sought to woo military voters Friday during a campaign rally in Wayne, Pennsylvania. At an event at Valley Forge Military Academy and College, he accused U.S. President Barack Obama of trying to slash the defense budget.
3. (SOUNDBITE) (English) REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE MITT ROMNEY SAYING:
"Our Navy is smaller in terms of the number of ships than any time since 1917. And our Air Force is older and smaller than any time since it was founded in 1947, and yet we continue to take funding out of our military. This idea of a trillion dollars in cuts to our military is wrong. When I'm elected president of the United States, we will restore our military. We will not cut our military commitment."
Romney also expressed optimism for his prospects in Pennsylvania, despite admitting earlier that the state would be difficult for him to win.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll shows Obama leading Romney by five percentage points nationally.
