Moore Back to ASP World No. 1 with Win at Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic
DEE WHY, New South Wales / Australia (Friday, May 6, 2011) - Hawaiian surfing prodigy Carissa Moore reclaimed the ASP world no.1 ranking when she scored her second ASP win of the year at the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic at Sydney's Dee Why Beach on Friday.
The 18 year-old defeated, 2004 world champion Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) to win the worlds richest women's event. Moore came into the tournament ranked No.2 behind Australia's Sally Fitzgibbon but today's victory awarded the Hawaiian USD40000 and 11,000 ASP ratings points.
On a day when wave selection proved critical to success, Moore clawed her way back into the lead in the dying minutes of the final, posting 6.83 and 8.33 (out of ten) scores, to defeat the Mulanovich by 15.60 to 14.60 (out of 20.00).
Moore won the opening event of the 2011 ASP Women's World Title tour on the Gold Coast and has made the final in all four ASP events this year. The powerful natural footer has marked herself as the surfer to beat in this year's ASP world title race with only three events remaining.
Australia's hopes of crowning a 2011 Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic champion were dashed in the semi-finals with the elimination of both Sally Fitzgibbons, 20, (Gerroa, NSW) and three time defending event Stephanie Gilmore, 23, (Gold Coast, Qld).
An out of sync, Sally, suffered a shock-elimination by Mulanovich, costing her a finals berth and the No.1 spot on the ASP Word Title rankings. Mulanovich posted two strong scores in the dying minutes of semi-final no.1 to snatch victory from Fitzgibbons.
Fitzgibbon's equal third place finish marks her second semifinal placing of the season adding to an already impressive tally of two wins to now be ranked at World No.2.
Four times ASP World Champion Gilmore (AUS) equaled her best result of the season placing equal third after she finished a mere half a point behind Moore.
Gilmore climbs one place to World No. 4. Gilmore, opened up with a massive 9.6 but her next best wave was a 6.4 while Moore had two solid scores of 8.33 and 8.17 to give her a 16.5 to 16 victory in tricky three-foot waves.
In the quarter finals Gilmore was in outstanding form against countrywoman Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) who she defeated 17.17 to 15.10 in a performance that included a heat high wave score of 8.6.
Sixteen year-old wildcard Nikki Van Dijk (Aus) came close to causing a major upset at the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic in her quarterfinal rematch with world ratings leader Fitzgibbons. The Phillip Island, schoolgirl was narrowly eliminated by less than half a point to finish equal fifth overall.
The ASP Women's World Title Tour now moves to Brazil for the Billabong Rio Pro commencing May 12th.
