Who are these nerds anyway?

Just a question of labels.
It seems we've reached a point when new terms need to be coined if we want to define this emerging category of people who spend a lot of time online, can fix computers and play games -even arcade-, have alternative political views, listen to underground music, have read real books -not mangas-, and would still be considered nerds just because of the digital aspects of their lives. I mean the kids who used to hang at the arcade in my town back in the 80s were far away from being geeks, for instance, in fact a lot of them were thugs.
Well folks, in short, let's generalize wisely then, please.
