United Nations envoy Lakhdar Brahimi arrived in the Turkish province of Hatay on Tuesday (September 18) to meet with Syrian refugees sheltering at camps near the border.

Brahimi was briefed by the governor of Hatay, Celalettin Lekesiz, before heading to Altinozu camp where some 1000 refugees are registered.

During talks, Brahimi said he hoped all Syrian refugees would soon be able to return to their homeland.

''We hope that their country will find peace again and that they can return to their country as early as possible,'' he said.

Turkey is home to 83,000 Syrians lodged at 14 refugee camps set up in southern provinces near the border.
