Clashes raged into Thursday morning outside the U.S. embassy in Cairo.

Demonstrators hurled missiles at security forces, who in turn fired tear gas from their armoured vehicles.

The clashes began almost 24 hours after Egyptians gathered near the embassy, angered at a low-budget U.S.-made film demeaning the Prophet Mohammad. For many Muslims any visual depiction of Mohammad is proscribed.

On Tuesday, protesters scaled the embassy's walls and tore down an American flag.

Also on Tuesday night, the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three of his staff members were killed during an attack on the United States' consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.
