Syria's Aleppo at heart of new clashes

Syrian rebels in Aleppo fire guns as fighting in the commercial hub heats up.

Activists say the city has been under heavy fire since Sunday when warplanes launched an airstrike that killed and wounded dozens in the Hananu district.

Reuters could not independently verify the footage uploaded to a social media website.

President Bashar al-Assad is using airstrikes to prevent the fall of Aleppo as the bloody popular uprising continues relentlessly.

On Monday, Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN and Arab League's special envoy to Syria, said he was traveling to Damascus within the week.

During his meeting with Arab League officials in Cairo, he said he was hopeful he would meet directly with Assad to discuss ways of ending the blooshed.

The UN's previous envoy Kofi Annan was unable to uphold a shaky ceasefire inside Syria earlier this year.

According to UN figures, more than 18,000 Syrians have died in the conflicts, while hundreds of thousands more have fled the country.
