How do you tell the story of the deaths of 200,000 people?

It may seem impossible.

Perhaps that's one reason behind the title of a movie picturing one family's experience of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

The Impossible, featuring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.

McGregor said the biggest challenge was doing the characters justice - especially as the script is based on a true story.

"Well there's a responsibility to him, but in a situation like this, the responsibility lies more with the people who were, all of the survivors and all of the people that lost their lives there. I think you sort of feel that responsibility a lot. I know I did. I know the director did and the other cast members."

McGregor plays a father of three children who, along with his wife, are vacationing in Thailand when the tsunami hits on December 26, 2004.

The family is swept up and separated, but struggle to survive one of the worst natural disasters in history.

It was written by Watts' character Maria.

The Impossible goes on general release in December.
