Geoffrey Rush braves "The Eye of the Storm."

The Academy Award winner is starring in a film that explores the dimensions of family relationships.

The silver screen adaptation of Patrick White's 1973 novel conjured up feelings for Rush about his own family.

SOUNDBITE: Geoffrey Rush, actor, saying (English):

"Curiously enough, in Australia when it opened, people felt they had to make comments about the literary nature of the adaptation. Have they caught Patrick White's great novel on the screen? But most people came out a little stunned and started to talk about their own families. And I thought, yeah, that's what you can do in the format of a two-hour film. I think that's the connection point."

Rush plays a struggling actor, whose mother fails to support his pursuits.

But the relationship he had with his real-life mother couldn't have been more different.

SOUNDBITE: Geoffrey Rush, actor, saying (English):

"She, without any kind of showbiz background, supported me when I said I wanted to be an actor and I actually got to do professional work. She said, if that's what you want to do."

The film opens in the U.S. on September 7th.
