A fire rips through a Sao Paulo favela, as firefighters try to tame the blaze.

More than 1,000 people were left homeless in the Brazil slum after almost 300 homes were destroyed in the Monday fire.

Residents used pails of water to try and douse the blaze and fought to rescue their personal possessions.

Six people were injured as the flames soared up to 10 metres high.

This man, whose house was destroyed, said he was grieving for the loss of the home that he built.

Firefighters said the fire may have started in a slum garbage dump.
