The new head of the International Committee of the Red Cross has met Syria's President Assad to discuss the humanitarian crisis.
Peter Maurer is thought to have urged President Assad to allow better access for aid workers during his 45 minute meeting with the Syrian leader.
The Red Cross has 50 workers in the country but the fighting has confined them all to Damascus.
