Portugal's centre-right wins election

The Social Democrats have unseated the Socialist caretaker government in Portugal's election, winning more than 40 per cent of the vote.

The new government, led by Pedro Passos Coelho, will enact a gruelling austerity programme, following Portugal's $114 billion international bailout.
