Honduran farmers slam land deal

Government-backed efforts to resolve a long-running land dispute between poor farmers and wealthy landowners in Honduras have run into trouble.

A deal, which would allow farmers to buy thousands of hectares of land - with government loans - from the owners, has been severely criticised by the farmers who say the interest rates are way too high.

They say that if they are unable to make the payments, the land might fall back into the hand of the companies.

Many farmers continue to blame government security forces and police for attacking them on behalf of wealthy landowners.
