NYC Taxi gets Japanese makeover

The iconic New York City yellow cab, long identified with the classic Ford Crown Victoria is undergoing a contemporary makeover thanks to a bid by Japanese automaker Nissan.

Nissan's new look, featuring a glass roof panel to watch the city's skyscrapers go by, has won the auto manufacturer a 10-year, one billion dollar contract for a new fleet of cabs that will transport up to 600,000 passengers per day.

The new NV200 is set to hit the busy streets of New York in late 2013.

Al Jazeera's Cath Turner reports from New York City.
