Chinese activists deported from Japan

Japan sends back 14 Chinese activists by both plane and their own boat after they were detained for setting foot on an island claimed by both countries.

The activists were detained on Wednesday after using a boat to land on the rocky, uninhabited isles known as Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China.

Beijing had issues a series of demands for their immediate release.

The quarrel over the islands, which lie near potentially rich gas reserves, is one of several dogging Japan's ties with its Asian neighbour - some seven decades ater the end of WWII.
