London bade farewell to the Olympic Games on Sunday (August 12) with a high-octane romp through British pop music, bringing the curtain down on more than two weeks of action at the end of which the United States topped the sporting world with 46 gold medals.

Fireworks sparkled over the Olympic Park as the ceremony drew to a close.

There was another sellout crowd at the 80,000-capacity athletics stadium in East London for the final act of the tournament, and another 300 million people were expected to tune in on television sets around the world.

In Hyde Park, tens of thousands of people watched the closing ceremony on big screens, and witnessed performances by bands including Blur and the Bombay Bicycle Club.

The Olympic flag was passed from London's mayor to the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, marking the handover of the custody of the Games during the closing ceremony of London 2012.
