Car bomb kills eight in Iraq

At least eight people were killed and around 30 others were wounded when a car bomb exploded here southeast of Baghdad on Thursday.

Witnesses said the car bomb ripped through a market place just before iftar, the fast-breaking meal, only a few metres from a Shi'ite mosque.

Worshippers had gathered there to mark the day Imam Ali was wounded before his death two days later on the 21st day of Ramadan in 661.

The attack was the latest in an apparent spike in violence since the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
