He's the new face at the helm of the latest chapter in the highly successful Bourne franchise.

Jeremy Renner portrays Aaron Cross in "The Bourne Legacy", a spin-off replacing the series' former main character, CIA agent Jason Bourne played by Matt Damon.

The film is due to hit US theatres on August 10, and on Monday (July 30), the new cast came out for its world premiere in New York.

All three previous movies earned almost a combined $1 billion (USD) in global box office sales.

Some big shoes to fill, but according to Renner starring in film number four also has its advantages.

"Those last three movies that set the bar for like pace and tone and ferocity of actions. So it actually helped, gave you an idea of what it was going to feel like and the outcome was going to be like. So it gave me a running start, really, more than anything, than added pressure."

The movie takes place during the events of "Bourne Ultimatum," when Jason Bourne's story is revealed to the general public.

Unlike Bourne, Cross is one of six agents participating in a governmental programme to genetically groom agents for isolated high-risk assignments.

While it can be viewed as a stand-alone movie, "Legacy" director Tony Gilroy, said the film was a real treat for die-hard fans.

"Can see the film without knowing anything about the previous three, but if you know anything about the previous three films, hopefully this is a - hopefully it preserves and enriches what you've seen before and there's a lot there for people who are super freaks, fans who are deep fans of the franchise."

Apart from Cross more characters are introduced.

Rachel Weisz portrays lab scientist Dr. Marta Shearing, and Edward Norton stars as Eric Byer who is revealed as the mastermind behind the government projects.
