What Is Pre-Diabetes?

Dr. David Samadi, leading prostate cancer surgeon, explains pre-diabetes and the important blood test used to detect it. Hemoglobin A1C is a blood test used to check how much sugar is coating your red blood cells. This simple blood test should be part of your routine blood screen, particularly by the age of 45 or for those who are considered high risk for developing diabetes. Pre-diabetes is diagnosed in patients whose sugar level is elevated, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. A hemoglobin A1C of less than 5.7%, along with a fasting glucose result of less than 100, are considered normal. Patients with pre-diabetes have a hemoglobin A1C range of 5.7-6.4% and a fasting glucose of 100-125. Those above 6.4% and 125 are diagnosed with diabetes. Pre-diabetes can be reversed through exercise, weight loss, reducing sugar, portion control, and focusing on the right carb consumption.
