Niger facing famine disaster

The United Nations World Food Programme says it needs close to $300m to prevent a humanitarian disaster, as more than five million people in Niger are at risk of famine or severe food shortages.

The signs are subtle, but clear. Elders in one village believe one of the worst droughts in living memory is coming.

Grain stores are low, or empty, and many have nothing to eat for four months, until the next rainy season.
