Chinese artist Ai held for 'economic crimes'

The Chinese government has broken its silence over the detention of the famed artist Ai Weiwei.

The state news agency says he's under investigation for suspected "economic crimes".

Ai was last seen trying to board a flight to Hong Kong on Sunday. He's one of many pro-reform activists the government has arrested in recent weeks.

Al Jazeera's Rob McBride reports from Hong Kong.
