Rebel and government forces clash in Damascus
- 12 years ago
The crackle of small arms fire echoes through the streets of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
According to activists, violent clashes between rebels and government forces continued for a second day, forcing hundreds to flee the fighting.
Syrian troops backed by armoured vehicles were said to have advanced through the city centre, driving out rebels who had secured a foothold within striking distance of major state installations.
Video uploaded to a social media website was said to record the fighting in several Damascus neighbourhoods.
The latest fighting would be the biggest armoured deployment in Damascus since the beginning of the 17-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
Reuters can't independently verify the content of this footage, largely due to severe restrictions on foreign media in Syria.
