The Spanish soccer team left their hotel in Kiev and headed for the airport on Monday (July 2) morning, after taking their place among the game's greats when they thrashed Italy 4-0 last night to become the first team to win successive European Championship titles.

Dozens of fans, mainly Ukrainians, gathered outside the team hotel in central Kiev to say 'goodbye' to their heroes.

The team is scheduled to arrive in Madrid at 3pm local time (1300 gmt).

Spain have become the first European side to win three major tournaments following their success in Euro 2008 and the World Cup two years ago.
