Tens of thousands of fans gathered at Rome's ancient open-air Circus Maximus arena to watch their side take on Spain in the Euro 2012 final. It wasn't long before the sounds of cheering, firecrackers and vuvuzela trumpets fizzled out and supporters looked on in bitter disappointment.
