Eyesight in Women Worsens Faster Than in Men? - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

The eyesight of men does not deteriorate as fast as the eyesight of women according to a study published in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. Scientists at the University of California who were researching presbyopia, which is the gradual loss of near sight with age, conducted the study which said that the difference between men and women was “likely due to differences in preferred reading distances or arm length as women tend to hold reading materials closer than men do.” This causes women to need bifocal lenses and reading glasses at an earlier age than most men.

Four million Americans develop presbyopia every year. Bifocal lenses are believed to have been invented by Benjamin Franklin, who is quoted as saying “I cannot distinguish a letter even of large print; but am happy in the invention of double spectacles, which serving for distant objects as well as near ones, make my eyes as useful to me as ever they were.”
