Saudi royals express their grief after Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz dies in Switzerland on Saturday following a long illness.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PRINCE DR. MISHAAL BIN ABDULLAH BIN TURKI AL-SAUD, A HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST, SAYING:

"The death of His Royal Highness Prince Nayef is a loss for all humanity, he was one of the greatest men in the defence of homeland security and the stability of society in general. I believe that the whole house of Saudi feels orphaned on this night."

The Crown Prince, thought to be in his late 70s, began his political career early and was a staunch ally of conservative Wahhabi Muslim clerics.

He was also in charge of protecting Saudi Arabia from internal threats, particularly from Islamist militants.

Crown Prince Nayef is to be buried in the holy city of Mecca on Sunday.
