It's the latest toxic food scandal in China—poison apples.

Orchards in Yantai city in eastern Shandong province are allegedly using pesticide bags to protect growing apples. This practice is illegal and authorities say they are now investigating.

Chinese media reported apple growers are using bags coated with pesticide, and wrapping them around young, growing apples. This is meant to protect the surface of the apples and keep out diseases that could hurt the crop yield.

State-controlled Beijing News reported that the pesticide includes banned chemicals including Tuzet and arsenical fungicide.

Yantai is one of China's main apple producers. More than 1.3 billion pounds of apples from here are sold domestically and exported worldwide.

This is not the first time pesticide bags have been found. State-run media report authorities had discovered them previously in 2010.
