The tallest building in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk caught fire on Saturday (June 2), spreading smoke and some flames from the 6th to 26th floors of the highrise, according to Russian media reports.

Amateur video uploaded to social media websites by several users at various vantage points in the city showed a column of billowing black smoke and flames shooting up the front of the 'Sun City' complex.

Reuters cannot independently verify the content of the video.

Citing the Russian Emergencies Ministry, Russian media said the fire could have been started by a welder's torch igniting a banner. Firefighters evacuated 150 people, none of whom were injured, Interfax reported the ministry as saying.

'Sun City' is a shopping and entertainment complex, containing offices, shops, restaurants, cinemas and a children's playground. State television channel Russian 24 put the height of the building at 83 metres (272 feet).
