Deadly blasts strike across Baghdad

The aftermath of a deadly blast in the Iraqi capital -- one of six that went off in Baghdad on Thursday.

At least nine people were killed and 27 were wounded when a truck bomb exploded in a busy Baghdad market.

The blast accounted for all but two of those killed in the wave of attacks.

The biggest blast went off near a restaurant in the mainly Shi'ite Shula district, and comes as the first serious attack in the city since mid-May, when a suicide bomber attacked a police checkpoint.

Witnesses and police said the suspected bomber left a vegetable delivery truck packed with explosives at the market minutes before the bomb detonated.

While violent attacks persist in the country, they have fallen sharply since the height of sectarian fighting several years ago.

Nonetheless, the threat of attack remains a daily worry for many Iraqis.
