The glitz and glamour at the Palais des Festival are ablaze as last minute preparations are made for the official kick-off of the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

As the red carpet was unrolled to welcome the cast of the opening movie "Moonrise Kingdom" journalists and moviemakers rushed to secure their spots.

Long time festival worker Elisabeth Farhat is hoping the 11 day event is better than last year.

"I've been working at the Festival for 30 years, so I have a small idea of what it is. Last year's festival was pretty depressing and I think this year it's going to be a bit more dynamic."

For cinema lovers, the festival is the occasion to get closer to a glamorous world that they can only imagine.

Film enthusiast Anne-Marie Stahl.

SOUNDBITE: Anne-Marie Stahl, movie goer, saying (French):

"We come for the Festival, for the dream of the Festival. It's a dream to see all these people, a world we will never have another occasion to see. So we're happy to come here to evacuate all the worries we have in our heads, because during 10 days we will not think about them, and this is fantastic."

The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 16th to May 27th.
