Scuffles break out during Mubarak trial

He began the year as Egypt's president - and one of the Arab world's most powerful men.

On Wednesday, Hosni Mubarak went on trial for murder and corruption, just months after the revolution that ended his 30 years in power.

The former leader was wheeled into a courtroom on a hospital bed.

Along with his interior minister, Mubarak is accused of conspiring to kill anti-government protesters and stealing millions of dollars from the state.

His sons Alaa and Gamal are also on trial for corruption.

Outside the police academy, Mubarak's backers and opponents threw stones at each other.

The clashes flared before, during and after the trial appearance.

Around 3,000 police were drafted in to maintain security.
