Running battles have broken out in Bangkok's streets where troops and anti-government protesters have clashed.

Gunfire and explosions have been heard as thousands of so-called "Red Shirt" protesters demand that Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Thai prime minister, resign.

More than 70 people have been injured and many streets are deserted.
