The United States imprisons more individuals per capita than any other country in the world - almost one in one hundred adults.

Total spending on the correctional system topped $49bn in 2007.

With current financial turmoil in the US, budget cutbacks have been forced and newly-released inmates are facing a bleak re-entry into society.
