Although brutal and violent, a study has shown that Iraqi women were more protected under Saddam's reign
compared to the situation after the US-led invasion in 2003. Iraqi women today are subjected to random violence of assault, rape, kidnapping or death at the hands of suicide bombers, American troops, Iraqi police, even radical religious groups and local thugs.
