Political and economic concerns have apparently affected what has become a tradition for US presidents in recent decades - a meeting with the Dalai Lama.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader is visiting both New York and Washington DC this week, but a meeting with the US President Barack Obama has been put off, in an attempt to improve relations with China.
