US considers closing Myanmar gem loophole

The US banned gems imported from Myanmar in 2003 as part of wide economic sanctions against the military government.
But a legal loophole still allows them to enter the country if they are first cut and polished elsewhere.
Nearly 90 percent of the world's rubies are mined in Myanmar, and many of the good quality rubies in the US originate from Myanmar.
