Taiwan conducted a simulated airborne attack from mainland China on Thursday (April 19) as part of its largest annual military drill.

Thousands of police and military forces around Taiwan performed simulated drills to defend the island country in the event of an attack from the mainland.

The five-day annual affair, known locally as the Hangkuang, began on Monday (April 16) and is the biggest it has been in recent years, Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications said.

China claimed Taiwan as its own since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949 and has vowed to bring the island under its rule.

The U.S. switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979 but remains the island's biggest ally and arms supplier.

Beijing has voiced strong opposition to arms sales deals between Taiwan and Washington.
