France's urban affairs minister tours banlieues - 01 Nov 07

It's been two years since France's deprived suburbs erupted in rioting. Rebuilding them is seen as one of
President Nicholas Sarkozy's greatest challenges.

To do that, he's appointed one of his critics as the new Secretary of State for Urban Affairs. Fadela Amara - who's of Algerian descent - was herself raised in the tough ghettoes.

She's been on a fact finding tour of the country's most deprived banlieues, both in France and in the French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, near Madagascar. Al Jazeera's Nick Clark travelled with her.
