Gunmen attack embassies in Afghan capital

Taliban gunmen launch multiple attacks in the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday, where gunbattles raged for hours.

They assaulted Western embassies in the heavily-guarded diplomatic area, and at the parliament in the west of the city.

Sporadic gunfire could be heard from different parts of the city.

The attack is one of the boldest on the capital since U.S.-backed forces removed the group from power in 2001.

The Taliban issued a statement saying tens of fighters were involved, armed with heavy and light weapons.

Their main targets were the German and British embassies, as well as the headquarters of Afghanistan's NATO-led force.

Afghan security forces, who are responsible for the safety of the capital, were scrambling to secure areas around the so-called green diplomatic section of the city centre.

A spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force said via Twitter that there were no reports of casualties.
