At least 33 dead in Russia plane crash

Officials say at least 33 of the 43 people on board died in the Monday crash.

Another five survivors were in critical condition.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) YURI ALEKHIN, HEAD OF THE TYUMEN REGIONAL BRANCH OF THE RUSSIAN EMERGENCIES MINISTRY,SAYING:

"We arrived at the scene within 15, 17 minutes. As you can see, it's practically impossible to reach the site so we got as far as we could and then went the rest of the way on foot and started pulling away wreckage by hand and carrying away the injured."

Aircraft owner UTair said on its website that the pilots were trying to make an emergency landing when the plane came down 1.5 kilometres from the runway.

The UTair crash is the latest blight on Russia's already questionable air safety record.

Analysts say everything from Soviet-aged aircraft to poor training and lackluster air traffic regulations are to blame.

This is the most deadly crash in Russia since a Yak-42 aircraft slammed into a riverbank after takeoff last year, killing 44 people and wiping out a local ice hockey team.

Authorities say they lost contact with the plane about three minutes after takeoff.

An investigation was underway.
