Annan talks Syria peace with China

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao greets U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in Beijing.
Following his trip to Russia, Annan is on a two-day visit to China designed to shore up support for his peace mission in Syria.
Both Russia and China had previously used their vetoes to shield Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from U.N. Security Council condemnation.
Annan told Wen that Syria has accepted a six-point peace proposal calling for a cease-fire, humanitarian aid, and political dialogue.
Annan said China has pledged support for the process.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) JOINT ENVOY OF THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE ARAB LEAGUE KOFI ANNAN SAYING:
"They have offered me their full support. They're going to work with me and the other members of the council to ensure that the six-point plan is implemented. And I indicated that I had received a response from the Syrian government."
Syria's fractious opposition groups began reconciliation talks in Istanbul on Tuesday aimed at demonstrating they can provide a coherent and effective alternative to President Bashar al-Assad.
