Gunshots and explosions echo through the darkness in the ongoing siege at the apartment of a suspected killer in the French city of Toulouse.

Police launched an assault on the building late on Wednesday night (March 21) where the man suspected of killing seven people in the name of al Qaeda is holed up.

Officers have been trying to get 24-year-old Mohamed Merah to turn himself in after he fired through the door at them as they tried to storm the apartment early on Wednesday.

Merah is suspected of killing three children and a teacher outside a Jewish school in Toulouse in the name of al Qaeda on Monday (March 19).

He is also accused of killing three soldiers in two attacks on the 11th and 14 of March.
