Jewish communities were in shock at the killing of four people, including three children, in Toulouse on Monday.

In Paris, religious figures expressed their outrage.

"I'm aghast, I'm really outraged at what has happened in Toulouse this morning. It is cowardly to attack children and I hope those who committed this act are severely punished."

Another man said he was saddened because the victims were active in Paris' Jewish community.

Others questioned what drove the attacker, who opened fire then escaped on a motorbike, to target the Jewish school.

Israel's ambassador in Paris condemned the attack and demanded that the French government do everything in its power to bring justice for the victims.

"The Jewish community here, the jewish school was a target. This is something that cannot be understood. How can you aim at children from a close range and kill them? At innocent civilians?"

Israelis joined their French counterparts in expressing their grief.

Earlier French President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed to catch the gunman and investigate any link with the killing of three soldiers in two similar incidents in the region last week.
