Fighting in a main district of Damascus has been reported between Free Syria Army rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar al Assad.
According to witnesses the sound of heavy machinegun fire could be heard from the western neighbourhood of al-Mezze.
The area is one of the most heavily guarded in the capital and is home to several security installations.
