Police in Colombia bust an international trafficking ring and arrest dozens of alleged members of the infamous "Los Galeano" gang with suspected links to Mexico's notorious drug lord Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman. Here's more.
Police in Colombia raided a gang safe-house in Bogota on Saturday and arrested 35 people on charges of exporting tons of cocaine chemicals to Mexico for eventual trafficking to the United States.
It followed similar arrests in neighboring Venezuela and the seizure of dozens of aircraft that are thought to be used to transport illicit drugs by the group throughout the region.
[General Oscar Naranjo, Director, National Police]:
"We succeeded in capturing 35 members of a gang called "Los Galeano." Before this capture, in 9 Colombian cities and also in Caracas, we seized 11 tons of hydrochloride, 5 tons of a base chemical substance and 25 stationary airplanes."
Authorities say the local gang operated with larger organized criminal gangs in the Americas such as the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and Mexico's powerful Sinaloa Gang.
[General Oscar Naranjo, Director, National Police]:
"We must stress that this organization was a mafia gang who had an enclave with another group named "ERPAC", alias "El Loco Barrera", who had links to traffickers from the west and with the FARC. Also, they were the direct supplier of hydrochloride of cocaine to Mexico on behalf of the Chapo Guzman's (Sinaloa Gang)."
Vehicles and some $1 million dollars was also seized by police.
Colombian authorities have vowed to dismantle a well-established drugs infrastructure that sees tons of cocaine pass through Guatemala and Mexico on its way north.
Plagued by a decades-long guerrilla conflict, Colombia remains the world's No. 1 cocaine producer and many armed groups are engaged in the drug trade.
